How Winter Impacts Scottish Manufacturers
Posted by Jill Glen on 2nd Nov 2023
Scottish Winter is famously harsh, and for the trade industries that we serve, it can be especially difficult, increasing the number of hazards that people face on a daily basis. The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has general regulations which mandate that every employer must provide a safe and secure workplace for its employees, and most Scottish manufacturers that we work with do a fantastic job of taking care of their people. In fact, Scotland reports a lower rate of workplace injuries than the rest of the UK, and the number falls every yea.
That said, Winter is a problematic time for manufacturers because it brings new hazards that create complications in the production areas and beyond, so here are a few areas to be extra vigilant during the next few months.
Driving
Many manufacturers have company-owned vehicles for collections and deliveries which all need to be equipped with extra supplies during the winter months. De-icer, vehicle covers, and other accessories can help – view our vehicle care collection for more ideas.
Icy Car Parks and Footpaths
Ice and snow can be hazardous to employees, couriers and visitors, so make sure you are ready to keep these areas clear and safe. We have snow shovels, salt and grit boxes and more to help you prevent slips and falls.
Wet Floors Inside
Once they’ve navigated the outside areas, wet boots can make plant floors slippery and dangerous so you need to ensure you have non-slip matting where possible, and warning signs wherever necessary to keep people safe.
Loading Docks
Loading and shipping docks can be open to the weather for long periods, so providing your staff with winter workwear and heaters is vital to keep them safe and healthy.
Manufacturing can be hazardous all year round, but winter has special challenges. Dirt and contaminants can bring more challenges in these months for quality control as well as safety.
